Are The Sugababes Done?

6 number one singles, 18 top 10 hits, 4 platinum albums, 12 million records sold world wide, it's not a surprise why the 'Babes are the most successful female act of the 21st Century in the UK. Of course an artists greatness can't be (and shouldn't be) measured on record sales and statistics alone. Where there is success with this group, there is also substance. 'Round Round', 'Freak Like Me', 'Hole in the Head', 'About You Now', 'Overload'..just some of the fantastic singles the girl band has released over its near 13 year life span, all of which have been a part of equally amazing albums. However in recent years, their success as a group has seen a sharp turn for the worse with numerous line-up changes, in-group public fall outs and a slump in record sales. With new conflicting reports from members Amelle and Jade about the bands future, I ask "Are The Sugababes Done?".

Earlier this week newest member Jade Ewan, gave an exclusive interview to Digital Spy revealing that "I don’t even know if the band stuff is going to happen again, if I’m completely honest,”. You can really tell she's excited about the groups future by calling the Sugababes "band stuff". She further went on to explain that "Amelle wants to do her own solo stuff, Heidi is doing a Happy Days musical… I think we’re pretty much done.". That statement pretty much cemented what many already believed, and that was that the Sugababes would indeed be no more. However in a recent interview, 8 year member Amelle explained that they were "going to regroup towards the end of next year". Further explaining that they were going to "have a regroup and see if we all want to release another album". Judging from Amelles statement, there at least looks to be some sort of future for the girls though its not for certain. Judging from Jades statement, she's pretty over it.

What this means for the band is uncertain, all we can gather from this is that they're in no rush to push out any Sugababes material but whether they will be able to release material or not is a question worth asking. One of the reasons the latest line-up has been such a failure, is the sheer lack of public interest. Their last album 'Sweet 7' was such a bitter commercial flop, that they got dropped from Jay Zs Roc Nation Label and single 'Freedom' received so little attention, an official release was plugged at the last minute to save further embarrassment. Even if the Babes wanted to release new material, will anyone even be interested? From going platinum to now struggling to sell a single, its quite a stark contrast to the girls success in the early 2000's. You might even say its an embarrassment to the legacy of the Sugababes.

Since the latest line-up change, many have also attributed this to be the final nail in the Sugababes coffin. Many casual and die-hard fans simply lost interest in the group. Fans grew attached to certain members of the group, and when they left even the most die-hard fans simply weren't interested anymore, most notably when Keisha left. After the year 2000, Siobhan Donaghy left the Babes and former Atomic Kitten vixen Heidi Range was brought in as a replacement. In 2005, Mutya Beuna left the group and long behold, Amelle Berrabah came into the Sugababes mix. Keisha Buchanan became the next one to leave the girls in 2009 after an unprecedented 11 year stint in the band, and was replaced by Eurovision songbird, Jade Ewan. If you look at the current line-up, there is not an original Sugababe member to be found. Of course just recently, the all original Sugababes 'MutyaKeishaSiobhan' released their comeback single. Meeting rave reviews all round, the girls have came back with a bang and being considered the "real" Sugababes back, the chances of fans and the public alike buying into the new line-up and being as interested in them as they are in MKS are seeming less likely.

With the future of the group looking uncertain, their public interest at an all time low and with the original "real' Sugababes back in full swing, the answer to my initial question is looking fairly obvious. The Sugababes' days seem to be numbered and yes, the Sugababes seem to be done.
